Drop the Debt Music Album
The Drop the Debt music album is a project that centres
on one of the main problems from developing countries – The
Debt. In 2001, Koffi Annan, the UN Secretary General announced that
38% of the budget of African countries was devoted to debt servicing,
thereby hindering the development in African countries. “The third world cries everyday” is one
of the songs featured on the album. Performed by a collaboration
of musicians called “Africa South”, this song brings
out the voices of the voiceless. It is about the people of Africa,
who continue to suffer because their governments spend more money
repaying debt, rather than on development projects. Sadly, Africa
South no longer exists. The concept band brought together by Steve
Dyer only came together for the recording of this one song.
According to Francois Mauger, all artists involved
in this music project were not paid, they came in an effort to spread
the message. Some of the musicians featured in Africa South include
Oliver Mtukudzi, Jabu Kanyile, Louis Mhlanga, Suthukazi Arosi, Khanyo
Maphumulo and Sam Mataure amongst others.
Murimi Munhu (a farmer is a person) is one of the
songs that Oliver Mtukudzi contributed to this music project. Murimi
Munhu is taken off Mtukudzi’s album Bvuma/Tolerance. Other artists featured on the album include Ceasaria
Evora, Sally Nyolo, Zedes, Maiway and El Hadji N’ Diaye to
mention but a few.
