Musik ye Afrika nominated for a SAMA award
United we Stand by Musik ye Afrika (MYA) was this year nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA) for best duo/band category. The SAMA awards were presented on May 29 at the Sun City Super Bowl in Johannesburg, South Africa. The award was however won by kwaito outfit Mafikizolo. “United we Stand” was released last year and featured Oliver Mtukudzi and Chiwoniso Maraire on the tracks Zuva and Serina. MYA is made up of Louis Mhlanga (guiter), Jimi Indi (bass) and Sam Mataure (drums). Sam Mataure is the former drummer for Oliver Mtukudzi and the Black Spirits. He joined MYA last year to replace the late veteran drummer Jethro Shasha. This year’s SAMA awards, saw Miriam Makeba and Zim Ngqwawana walking away with the top honours. Nqgwawana’s album Vadzimu won 3 awards namely, Best Male artists, Best South African Traditional Jazz album and for best engineered album an award that was awarded to Peter Pearlson.

Miriam Makeba’s Reflections won the Best Jazz vocal and Best Adult contemporary: English awards. MiriamMakeba’s, Live at Bern’s Salonger, Sweden, 1966 was awarded the Best DVD award. Vulindlela by the late Brenda Fassie was awarded the song of the decade award.
