Pakare Paye features shona drama in new culture initiative
As part of its cultural development programme targeting mainly pupils from schools in Norton, Pakare Paye Arts Centre is staging a play adapted from Kurauwone - a 1976 shona novel written by Ignatius Zvarevashe - thanx to the Culture Fund for supporting the Centre’s theatre and education initiative.
Plays are set for Thursday 5 June and Friday 6 June – starting at 2pm for both shows.
The idea behind the theatre for education initiative at Pakare Paye is embodied in the Centre’s vision to develop artistic talent among the youths.
The cast, drawn specifically from the Norton community – a mainly farming town 40km west of Harare - is in rehearsal polishing up their act, ready for the Thursday 5 June opening act.
In Kurauwone – a novel that has been used as part of the high school examination set books – the author chose the “old world” for the period of the story about life but the human truths he reveals is also found in the present times.
Says Watson Chidzomba director of operations at Pakare Paye: “The whole emphasis in this new initiative is to foster cultural enhancement through various arts disciplines but with a special and deliberate focus on pupils whom we want to develop at artistic level.
And what better way to use the literary arts!”
Hard on the heels of the stage drama are readings from Nduri DzeZimbabwe, an anthology of poetry coming on Thursday 12 June and Friday 13 June – again starting at 2 pm for both shows.
To add even more value to the programme the Centre is inviting some of the authors for panel discussions with the cast, pupils and audiences.
Admission for the stage drama and readings is free.
Pakare Paye Arts Centre, was conceptualized and built by Oliver Mtukudzi fundamentally to develop young artists across artistic diversity. The Centre became fully operational at the beginning of 2008 after five years of construction and refurbishment at an old industrial site in Norton.
