Pakare Paye Ensemble recording debut album, March 13 2006
Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi’s dream of working with young musicians is now a reality. Tuku is currently in the studio producing an album for the Pakare Paye Arts Ensemble (PPAE), a nine piece band of young talented individuals whom he brought together after conducting auditions at the Pakare Paye Art Centre (PPAC).

The album is being recorded at KwaSamanyanga Studio, located at Tuku’s home.
One of the members of the PPAE is 19 year old Keith Robert. The young musician told Tukumusic.com that he still could not believe that he is playing his guiter in the same studio with Oliver Mtukudzi. He added that Mtukudzi has given him a great opportunity to kick-start his career.

Winnet Sumeti and Chiedza Makaripe are vocalists in the band. The two were part of the large group of youth that attended auditions at PPAC in October 2004. The vocalists said when they were encouraged by Tuku to come for music rehearsals at the centre some of their colleagues and families told them they were wasting their time. “People used to say we are wasting our time and that we should forget about working with Tuku and look for proper jobs, “ said an excited Chiedza Makaripe.

“Today, the very people that discouraged us in the beginning are now approaching us, asking how they can be involved in projects at the Art Centre,” said Winnet Sumeti. Mtukudzi told Tukumusic.com that when he conducted auditions, some people had come with the prospects of getting employment. “They did not understand the main purpose of the centre, which was to assist them in nurturing their careers,” said the talented musician who is also working on his new album.

However, Tuku said those that came to learn how to sing and improve their talents stayed behind and today they are not regretting. “Pakare Paye is giving these young musicians an opportunity to nurture their talents under the guidance of experienced people who include producers, composers, engineers and actors” said Mtukudzi.

Sam Mtukudzi, son of Oliver Mtukudzi is also part of PPAE. The young musician plays acoustic guiter for the band. The young ‘Tuku’ is also known for his skills in playing the saxophone while playing with the Prince Edward Jazz Band. Besides singing with his father at home and of late on major shows, Sam is also in the studio working on an album with his band called the “A Band”. Wonder Mukonowenzou is co-producer and engineer for the album. He told Tukumusic.com that recording for the album began in November 2004 and should be finished by the end of March. The producer who has also been involved in the recording of Tuku’s albums said people should excpect “fireworks”.

Tuku is producing the PPAE album. He said members of the band were also working on solo projects. He also added “The recording of the album is meant to show the people of Zimbabwe the various talents in young people,” Meanwhile, the PPAC is scheduled to host a mini festival in May. Tuku said this would be a family fun day that will cater for both the young and the old. Exact dates for the festival are yet to be advised.
